We used cans to illustrate each thing they might need to forgive. Food storage cans come in handy for this. LOL The backpacks got heavier as they continued to hold onto forgiveness and we made them carry them as we would add the mean and hurtful things that would happen.
My 5yr old, during the part where we made him run up and down the stairs said, "I'm so weighed down." Perfect comment, right?!
My 10yr old also ended up saying, "can we forgive people?" "I just want to forgive people, Mom!"
YES! Please go ahead and forgive.
We sang, "How Gentle God’s Commands" - Hymns #314 and dropped our burdens at His feet as we forgave others.
SERVICE OPP! A service activity that could go along with this lesson perfectly could be to donate the super heavy cans to your local food bank. Find a local Food Bank in Utah here.

The Family Home Evening Lesson was such a success I decided to also do it for my Primary Class. My 10yr old was in the class so he got a bit out of hand, but I think it's because it's such an important lesson we must all learn, so it was just a bit more challenging because kids, but who knows, maybe your kids won't be rowdy and it will go more smoothly.
During sharing time a friend of my son's gave the talk in Primary and he described this EXACT activity and my class all looked over at me because we had just done this, it was awesome and so glad I had finally listened to the Spirit to just do this even though it was "old," so overall a huge success!
Why? because we know in 2 Corinthians 13:1 it says...
"In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established."

Here is the lesson all spelled out for you, read over it first before doing it and it will go much quicker than what I wrote out, because we only get about 20-30 min, depending on how quickly you get in your class. Download & Print the PDF so kids can do it at home with their families for FHE too or in case you missed part of the lesson they can finish it up with their families. For example we ran out of time to sing so we just skipped to the part where "we drop our burdens at His feet." So just do what you think is best for your class.

- Display a picture of Jesus Christ with feet.
- 5-16 Cans of Food
- Backpack
- Bible New Testament
- Sharpie or Paper & Pencil + Tape
It can be hard to forgive others.
😔 Describe how the soldiers were unkind to Jesus (see Matthew 27:26–37)
😇 Although the Savior had power, to call down “legions of angels” (Matthew 26:53), He voluntarily chose to endure unjust trials, cruel mocking, and unimaginable physical pain.
Q: Why did He do it? Why didn’t He fight back?
A: “Because of his loving kindness,” Nephi testified, “and his long-suffering towards the children of men” (1 Nephi 19:9).
✏️ On the cans (use a sharpie) or Pieces of Paper (and tape them to each can):
Have each person write/share a time when someone has said or done something unkind, hurtful, vengeful and even by accident.
Examples are when Someone...
- Says mean words to you.
- Tells you a lie.
- Yells at you.
- Hits you.
- Shows you bad media.
- Runs over your dog.
- Hits your car.
- Makes you do something you didn’t want to do.
- Steals from you.
- Calls you mean names.
- Doesn’t let you play.
- Leaves you all alone.
- Betrays you.
- Doesn’t keep their promise.
🎒Then put them all in the backpack. The backpack gets heavier and heavier each time we don’t forgive.
💪 Let people take turns carrying the backpack and doing something regular like walking, jumping jacks or standing on one foot. (Little kids could get hurt so keep an eye on them and don’t let them get too crazy!)
When we don’t forgive life can get hard & heavy!

🗣 QUOTE: Referring to the Savior’s words, President Henry B. Eyring taught: “We must forgive and bear no malice toward those who offend us. The Savior set the example from the cross. … We do not know the hearts of those who offend us” (“That We May Be One,” Ensign, May 1998, 68).
When we freely forgive others, we let go of bad feelings toward them, our life becomes easier to live as we can show love.

Q: What can you do to forgive someone who is unkind to you?
A: Take turns taking the cans out of the backpack and like the song says,
“I’ll drop my burden at his feet
And bear a song away.”
👣 Drop or place them, the hurtful things people did or will do, at the Savior’s feet or close to the picture. (Careful not to ruin the picture of Jesus Christ)
As you drop/place each can share ideas on how we can forgive, such as Pray to have kind feelings or Think of something good about the person.
🛑 Share something you know about when you forgave someone and how you felt afterward, then say, “in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.”
